The Chicago Golden Gloves tournament stretches all the way back to the legit old-school days of 1923, when fights in sweaty, smoke-filled arenas were barely a step up from bare-knuckled street brawling. Little changed through the years when boxing legends Joe Louis, Sonny Liston and Cassius Clay (who later changed his name to Muhammad Ali) took home the championship. It’s still a loud, rowdy event with a close-to-the action feel (only about 2,500 people fit in the arena). You can still get a Corona for $4 and popcorn for a buck (there’s other concessions as well). And with today’s Swoop, you can grab two tickets to the opening weekend of the Chicago Golden Gloves tournament for the price of one—just $10.
Even though Golden Gloves is technically amateur boxing, Chicago’s tournament is considered one of the most elite titles, along with the New York Golden Gloves. That means you’ll see top-notch athletes approaching the peak of their talents. What’s more, since this is opening weekend you’ll get your money’s worth of bouts—count on watching between 12 and 22 fights during your visit. The fights usually wrap up around 11 p.m., which gives you ample time afterwords to hit up some of the great bars clustered around nearby Wrigley Field. Golden Gloves is conveniently located 2 blocks west of Ashland. Take the brown line to the Paulina stop.
Unlike most high profile professional boxing events, Chicago Golden Gloves is a nonprofit. All the proceeds go to support inner city youth through the purchase of gym equipment, scholarships, and all-expense paid trips for winners to the National Golden Gloves Tournament, where boxers can qualify for the U.S. Olympic Team. So you’ll not only have an amazing time, you can feel like you’ve done a good deed as well.
